Former German intelligence chief August Hanning, 80, was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of treasonous espionage and passing state secrets to a foreign intelligence service.
Hanning, who headed Germany’s BND from 1998 to 2005, was detained in southern Germany. A former aide was also arrested and accused of helping with the alleged espionage.
Authorities did not say which country the two men are suspected of spying for.
