The image shows Karl-Arno Pünzeler, a 16-year-old Hitler Youth member and member of the “Klubs Heimattreue”, looking intimidated and beaten in his American-run prison cell in Monschau on January 6, 1945.
In December 1944, Karl-Arno was arrested for espionage and aiding “enemy” (German – i.e., supporting his own countrymen) troops, and was subsequently sentenced to death.
He had guided a German Stoßtrupp – involved in Operation “Stößer” – and a severely wounded soldier back to their own lines.
The boy was demonstrably beaten during interrogations (suffering a torn lung and having teeth knocked out).
The sentence was later commuted to a prison term and he was released after ten years.
